How important is it to get a laptop with HD? Is this the way of the future for laptops?

I want the laptop to last & not be obsolete w/i a year or so. Its for a college student who may, or may not, end up as an art major...the laptop I'm considering is the Dell Studio XPS 16. This student does not use the computer for online gaming.
