Western: how do you deal with split reins?

I cross/bridge mine. That way if I do drop them they won't fall to the ground. If I'm on a trail and want to just drop the reins, I make them plenty long to give the horse head and then put the extra under my legs to keep them from sliding down and the horse stepping on them if I'm not paying close enough attention. I never tie mine, leaves creases in them that I don't like when I untie them. Crossing them always works for me even on a high strung horse that is freaking out over something on the trail.
